The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has withdrawn its controversial sexual harassment advisory for female students following widespread criticism, stressing that the publication does not reflect the institution’s values even as it reaffirms its zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment.

The university stated this in a statement yesterday by the Head of its Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, following public outrage over a banner produced by the Student Affairs Division, which advised female students on ways to avoid sexual harassment and rape.

Earlier, an advisory displayed on a roll-up banner within the university had urged female students to adopt precautionary measures, including “Do not shake hands anyhow with any man,” “Do not dress to kill,” and “Do not mingle carelessly with men.”

The publication attracted criticism on social media, with many accusing the institution of promoting victim-blaming by placing responsibility on potential victims instead of perpetrators.

The poster, produced by the University’s Student Affairs Division, came under fire after it advised female students against actions, such as shaking hands with men, accepting gifts from men, staying alone with a man in a secluded place, and watching pornographic content.

The university’s management, however, acknowledged the concerns raised by members of the public and confirmed that the publication had been withdrawn.

It also reiterated its commitment to fostering a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment for all members of the university community.
