A lecturer from the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, has gained international recognition for her innovative research on antimicrobial resistance, earning a top investigator award at an international scientific gathering in Kenya.
Oluwatope Bamimore, from the Department of Pharmacognosy and Herbal Medicine in the Faculty of Pharmacy, earned the honour at the 4th International Symposium on Streptococcus agalactiae Disease (ISSAD 2026).
The symposium brought together over 200 researchers and experts from 37 countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Brazil, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Pakistan, and South Africa.
Out of many participants, six exceptional researchers were recognised, with Bamimore emerging as one of the best GBS investigators.
The award specifically acknowledged her research titled “Uvaria chamae Compounds as Natural Inhibitors of GBS Virulence”, with the study focusing on local plant-based solutions to fight bacterial infections.
Her work plays an important role in the global fight against the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and also supports the urgent search for new treatments that can target drug-resistant infections.
Following her emergence, Bamimore, who expressed gratitude for the award, described the recognition as a great honour, noting that it highlights the achievements of outstanding early-career researchers.
She also stated that the award validates the scientific value and innovative aspects of her research.
She stressed that being chosen from a small group of global awardees showcases the real impact and future potential of her work in advancing studies on infectious diseases and public health.
Reacting to the development, the vice-chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, extended her congratulations to the award-winning researcher.
She stated that the achievement serves as a reaffirmation of the high quality of research being conducted at the institution and underscores the global relevance of its human resources.
