The Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA), yesterday, dissociated itself from the arrest of over 100 illegal officers operating as Merchant Navy outfit.

The Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA), yesterday, dissociated itself from the arrest of over 100 illegal officers operating as Merchant Navy outfit.

The seafarers union described the arrest as a welcome development that will serve as deterrent to other fake bodies extorting teeming Nigerian youths of their hard earned money.

In a disclaimer signed by its Secretary General, John Okpono Aleakhue, the union stated that it represents Nigerian seamen both locally and internationally.

Aleakhue, who noted that the seafarers union operates within the ambit of the law and has no link with security activities, said that the union is the only recognised body in the Federal Government’s official gazette and the registered body saddled with the responsibility of catering for the welfare of Nigerian seafarers (officers).

He, however, noted that such general statement of proscribing the Merchant Navy without reservation by the police is damaging and misleading.

NMNOWTSSA had earlier notified the Federal Government, Nigerian Navy, Police and the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) about the activities of this group that disguise as marine merchants.
