Unmarked helicopters spark fear in Rivers community
Tensions are running high in Obuama community in Rivers State, following the appearance of unmarked helicopters flying over the residence of Mujahid Abubakr Dokubo-Asari, the Alabo Edi-Abali of the Kalabari Kingdom.
Residents have raised concerns, with many expressing fear for their safety as these low-flying helicopters with armed men on board appeared during the Local Government elections over the weekend.
Alhaji Dokubo-Asari, a key figure in the Niger Delta region, is known for his advocacy for resource control and minority rights as the leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force (NDPVF).
His close association with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has added to the weight of local concerns, especially in light of recent political tensions in the region.
According to eyewitnesses, two unmarked helicopters hovered over Dokubo-Asari’s residence on Saturday, creating a stir among the local population.
The situation escalated further when another helicopter returned today, adding to the mystery surrounding the incident.
Residents of Obuama, particularly the elderly, have expressed their growing anxiety over the unknown affiliation and mission of the helicopters, as the town is typically peaceful and hosts an army formation.
Mrs. Blessing Ebenezer, a 65-year-old local, voiced her fears, saying: “We are living in fear, not knowing what these helicopters are here for. We can’t sleep at night, thinking something terrible might happen.”
Community leaders have echoed these concerns, with Chief Barr. Opuene calling for immediate government action, nothing that the presence of these unmarked helicopters is unsettling.
He urged the authorities to investigate and reassure the community of their safety.
A Youth leader, Comrade Preye Harrison, who was the first to report the sighting, explained that Obuama has always been a peaceful community.
He said these mysterious helicopters are causing unnecessary tension, while demanding for answers.
Despite the growing alarm, authorities have yet to issue any official statement regarding the origin or mission of the helicopters.
As the mystery lingers, calls for an investigation into the helicopters’ purpose grow louder, with residents urging authorities to step in and provide clarity to prevent further unrest in the area.
