The Vice-Chancellor, Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, Prof. Babatola Ayodele, has advocated the integration of sustainability concepts into the country’s education curriculum.
Ayodele, who stated this at the second International Conference of the Faculty of Education, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), said there is a need for innovation in Nigeria’s education’s system, especially in the acquisition of skills to provide solutions to the myriads of challenges confronting the country.
The Professor of Education Management noted that learning should not only prepare students for future employment, but also equip them with knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to address global challenges, such as climate change, resource depletion, and social inequality.
“Transforming education for a sustainable future requires a holistic approach that includes inclusive policies, educational reforms, and innovative technologies,” he stated.
The vice chancellor noted that traditional models of education, which focus on memorisation and standardised testing, are no longer sufficient to prepare students for the challenges of the future.
He added that inclusive education must address the socio-economic barriers that prevent students from accessing quality education, such as poverty, discrimination, and lack of adequate learning materials.
FUOYE Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, who was represented by his Deputy, Prof. Olubunmi Shittu, said the theme of the conference was critical to addressing the myriads of challenges confronting the sector.
