We’ll continue to be catalyst for innovation, change, says UI VC

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Kayode Adebowale, has said that the institution will continue to be a catalyst for change, innovation and transformation.

Adebowale, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Aderonke Baiyeroju, stated this during the opening ceremony of the university at the 75th International Innovation Conference with the theme: “Research, Innovation, and Sustainable Development: Impacting the Global Community.”

The event, which was held at the Trenchard Hall of the university, attracted renowned scholars, thought leaders and students. They included Prof. Adeniyi Gbadegesin, Prof. Chinedum Babalola, Prof. Adejoke Akinyele, and a host of others.

Adebowale said: “For 75 years, the University of Ibadan has been a leader in shaping the intellectual landscape of Africa and beyond. Our institution has produced world-renowned scholars, Nobel laureates, and cutting-edge researchers that have significantly impacted sectors, such as health, agriculture, technology, and the social sciences. Today, we continue this proud legacy, using research as a tool to drive innovation and foster sustainable development.

“At the UI, we have aligned our research priorities with global goals. Whether it is developing renewable energy solutions or advancing public health institutions, our faculty and students are at the vanguard of creating transformative solutions.

“Together, let us honour the past 75 years while keeping our eyes firmly fixed on the future. The University of Ibadan is not just an institution of learning, but a catalyst for change. Through research, innovation, and our unwavering commitment to sustainable development, we will continue to shape the world for generations to come.”

In his goodwill message, the Local Organising Committee Chairman of the anniversary and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Peter Olapegba, who was represented by Prof. Adenike Akinjobi, said: “Innovation hubs are vehicles for students, academics, and researchers in the universities as well as the public to transform their ideas into market-driven solutions and development.”

“Transparency, openness, flexibility, truth, diligence, clear vision and trust are indispensable for creativity, innovation and transformation to thrive and prosper.”

In his lecture, the Executive Director of the Unified Platform for Innovation, Value Optimisation, Technology, and Applied Learning (uPivotal) and CEO of VentureCore LCC, U.S., Adah Ojile, said it was time to start solving global problems. Ojile, who spoke on the theme: “The University as an Innovation Incubator for the Global Community,” said the best ideas come from doing.

In his remarks, the Director, University Health Service, Dr Aderonke Ajav, urged students and all present to take care of their health, saying that health is more than access to care.

The Local Organising Committee co-chair, Prof. Olukemi Amodu, said innovation is pivotal to development. The Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, represented by the Director of Education in the ministry, said that by encouraging sustainable innovation, the academic community and industry could work towards achieving sustainable development goals, ultimately leading to positive impact in the society.
