‘Why Danjuma donated modern mortuary to Jalingo hospital’
Former Minister of Defence Minister, Lt.-Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), has offered reasons for building a state-of-the-art mortuary for the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jalingo in Taraba State.
Sharing the personal story that led to his action yesterday while commissioning the morgue, the elder statesman recalled an experience involving one of his workers, Barrister Dan Agbu, whose mother had passed away and was taken to the hospital.
He stated that “Agbu, who was abroad at the time, returned to find the mortuary in disrepair, with bodies left in poor conditions.”
Describing the incident as “terrible”, Danjuma said he was left with the option of contributing his quota to the growth of the medical facility.
His words: “When Barrister Dan Agbu narrated his ordeal to me, I knew I had to do something to change the situation. Along with another worker, we quickly took steps to construct a modern mortuary for the hospital.”
Emphasising the importance of maintaining the facility and its equipment, which he described as being among the best in the industry, the oil magnate urged the management to ensure its upkeep for the benefit of Taraba community and the country at large.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Bodiya Buma, lauded the Danjuma’s foresight and philanthropy.
He pointed out that the facility would greatly improve “how we preserve dignity in death, as well as enhance medical research and training.”
Stressing that the health sector in the state has continued to benefit from strategic intervention, the commissioner submitted that Danjuma’s donation underscored the importance of collaboration between the government, private individuals, and the community.
He commended Governor Agbu Kefas for his leadership and commitment to improving the health and well-being of the people of the state.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr Aisha Adamu, reiterated the readiness of the institution to protect and maintain the morgue and its facilities.
