‘Why govt avoid indigenous engineers in building’

Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers

The President, Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers, Engr Johnson A. Adeyoye, has said that one of the reasons that governments at all levels will not engage indigenous engineers is because they will not compromise with the politicians.

Adeyoye in a virtual meeting with journalists Thursday, stated that sometimes foreign construction firms may be ready to cooperate by compromising with the government officials whereas Nigerian qualified engineers may not be able to ‘play game’, saying, “We are not in issue of building collapse in the country.”

He regretted that building collapse has become embarrassing to citizens, professionals, and the government.

“We are emphasising training and re-training.It is impossible to give what one does not have. Our members have developed synergy with architects, surveyors, and others to deliver high standards of buildings that would be durable and stand a test of time,” he said.

The President expressed dismay that when a building collapses in any part of the country, the government will institute probe panel(s), unfortunately, nothing happens afterward and the problem remains.

At the 2024 National Conference in Abuja, he maintained that such a forum will enable the members to share knowledge, interact, and make presentations, especially in this challenging time when the cost of construction materials is hitting the top of the roof as a result of an increase in the pump price of fuel.
