Why President-elect, APC settle for Abbas as Reps Speaker, by group

As inauguration of the 10th National Assembly draws closer, a group in the ruling party, Progressives Foundational Movement (PFM) has offered insight into the choice of Dr. Tajudeen Abbas as next Speaker of the House of Representatives by President-elect, Bola Tinubu and leadership of the party. 

Leader of the group, Aganaba Johnson, adduced the long-standing alliance between Tinubu’s defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and President Muhammadu Buhari’s Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) as reason behind choice of Abbas. He referred to the preferred candidate’s academic, leadership and legislative records as another plus.
 
The alliance, it would be recalled, resulted in Buhari’s emergence in 2015. The President is serving out his last term of four years on May 29.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and outgoing Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila of the ACN stock were considered beneficiaries of the deal.

The victory of the President-elect is seen by pundits as a pay back time to the ACN block over their strong support for Buhari in the build-up to the 2015 general elections.
 
PFM claimed that the leadership of APC also considered the temperament of all aspirants, their integrity and public service experiences before settling for Kaduna-born politician.
 
While commending Tinubu and the Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, the group added that the choice of Abbas “is a well-thought out decision that would be in the best interest of the country.”
