The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday, dismissed reports suggesting that he is lobbying to be appointed Director-General (DG) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike, who reaffirmed his commitment to the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said he does not need to occupy any position in the President’s campaign council to contribute to his electoral victory.

The minister made the clarification through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, who described the reports as false.

A report in a section of the media had listed Wike among senior APC chieftains and government officials allegedly lobbying for, or being considered for, the position of Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

But dismissing the report, Olayinka said Wike had not discussed either the leadership or membership of the campaign council with anyone.

According to him, the minister is currently outside the country, taking a break after an intensive period of official engagements in the FCT.

“I am outside Nigeria, resting and relaxing after spending over 30 days, commissioning projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing ones, especially those scheduled for commissioning in December and January, next year,” Wike said.

He added that upon his return, his attention would be focused on the continued implementation of the administration’s programmes in the FCT and strengthening President Tinubu’s political standing in Rivers State and the nation’s capital.

“When I return, our focus will be the continuous delivery of our mandate in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to further enhance his electoral fortune in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.

Wike stressed that he was not seeking any campaign appointment, noting that his commitment to Tinubu’s re-election did not depend on occupying a formal position in the campaign structure.

“Therefore, I do not need to be the DG or even member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor has, in recent months, repeatedly expressed support for Tinubu’s administration and his bid for a second term in office.

His latest clarification comes amid growing political activities and alignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with political parties and major political actors already positioning themselves for the contest.
