Youths want monarchs sacked over Abuja trip

Youths of Aguleri community in Anambra East Council yesterday staged a protest demanding the dethronement of their traditional rulers, Igwe Peter Ikegbunam (Ezi Agulu Otu Aguleri) and Alex Edoziuno (Mkpunando).

The protesters, who displayed placards with inscriptions such as ‘Please remove Igwe Peter Udorji Ikegbuna and Alex Edoziuno for us’ and ‘We don’t want Igwe Alex Edoziuno and Udorji’ , said they wanted the monarchs sacked for travelling to Abuja with 10 of their colleagues to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari. However, the meeting did not hold.

The protesters blocked major roads in Aguleri as they expressed their support for the state government’s decision to suspend the 12 monarchs for one year over the trip.

The youths accused the traditional rulers of “gross misconduct”.

Addressing the protesters at Aguleri Roundabout, the President General of Aguleri Town, Mr Hippo Onwuekpuke, condemned conduct of the traditional rulers, claiming that they did not inform the elders before embarking on the journey.

Onwuekpuke said: “We are here to tell the world that we are not part of that activity. We condemn it in its entirety.

“We pray that the governor should withdraw their certificates of recognition because they have done worse things that make them act like despots than the visit to Abuja.”

The National President of Aguleri Youths Assembly, Mr Nnamdi Ikeli-Adimora, said the monarchs had embarrassed the town.

He said: “Apart from the visit to Abuja there are community issues on land sale which made the people to petition the government, and the traditional title holders and elders (Ojiani and Ichie) invited one of them but he refused.”
