Zamfara not celebrating Independence Day – Govt

Zamfara State was created in 1996 but has never, in the history of the State, celebrated Nigeria’s Independence Day.
Questions have been raised as to why the State has not been celebrating Independence Day, even though the State is part of Nigeria.

According to a student of Zamfara State College of Art and Science (ZACAS), Abdulahi Usman, the present Governor Dauda Lawal is very much educated, but he borrowed the leave from the past Governors of the State.

“Zamfara State is acting as if it is not part of Nigeria. The federal government will declare 1st October as a public holiday, but Zamfara civil servants will not enjoy it. Why should the state government agree with the public holiday?”

Another student from the Federal College of Education, Technical, Gusau, Fatima Aliyu, said that the situation needed to be addressed tactically because “we are as if we are foreigners in our own country,” she lamented.

A student of the Federal University Gusau, Anas Babangida, also expressed dismay over the way and manner the Zamfara State government was handling the Independence Day celebration in the State.

“Nobody can run away from reality, and the reality is that Zamfara State is still part of Nigeria,” she lamented.
She appealed to Governor Dauda Lawal to embrace the national Day celebration as a priority, saying that the State cannot be left alone in the national struggle.

Recall that since the creation of Zamfara State in 1996, the State has never celebrated Independence Day, for reasons best known to the leaders of the State.
