Give Nigerians water to drink

Sir: The recent executive bill seeking an Act to establish a central regulatory framework for the water resources sector for effective management, accessibility, and conservation of Nigeria’s surface and ground water resources, has split lawmakers along regional and ethnic lines. The effectiveness of the water regulatory framework may hardly convince pessimists and lawmakers who share the view of true federalism.

Government should focus on partnership with the state governments to meet the SDGs goal 6.1. That goal aims at achieving equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for everyone before 2030. If they do this, they reduce the risk facing about 69 million Nigerians mostly in rural communities who are unable to access potable drinking water. If government gives Nigerians potable water, we can avert cholera.
