Enough of campaign of calumny against Buhari

SIR: This piece is an appeal to the ruling party, PDP, its supporters, columnists and other interest groups to stop disparaging the personality of the former head of state, General Muhammadu Buhari. Instead, anyone who has an axe to grind with him over his conduct in office as a military officer, minister of petroleum/chairman of the NNPC, Head of state, PTF chairman, educational qualification or his eligibility to contest the forthcoming presidential election is free to seek legal redress.  

   With the trend of campaign, it will ridicule not only our democracy but also the office of the president.  Insinuations about him falling on the podium, alleged failing health, death, travelling abroad for medical attention, marriage and other mundane things are products of emotion and not of reasoning. There is no doubt that Buhari has constituted a headache for many at the corridors of power and people of questionable source of wealth because of his zero tolerance for corrupt practices. It is crystal clear that they would go to any length to stop him. 

   Nonetheless, campaigns of calumny instead of having desired effect on his candidature is rather making him more popular. An example is unsolicited newspaper advert from the opposition in most of the dailies castigating him for an unsubstantiated misconduct or the other. My advice is that campaigns should be issue-based as done in civilised clime and we should allow the electorate to decide. This is better than portraying ourselves as savages.
