Why Africa must advance AI-enabled nursing and patient-safety systems – Expert

Nigerian nursing and healthcare technology expert Taiwo Juliana Dada has called for greater investment in AI-enabled nursing systems, arguing that Africa has an opportunity to develop healthcare technologies built around frontline clinical realities and patient safety.

Speaking at a virtual health conference yesterday, Dada said the rapid adoption of electronic health records, artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and digital health platforms is changing how healthcare organisations identify risks and make clinical decisions.

She noted that one of the major challenges facing healthcare is not the absence of patient information, but the difficulty of converting fragmented clinical data into timely intelligence that nurses and other healthcare professionals can act upon.

“Every day, nurses generate and interpret critical information about patients, but information alone does not improve outcomes,” Dada said. “The real value comes when we can recognise meaningful changes early, prioritise the risks, and ensure that the right clinical action follows.”

Her position reflects a broader challenge identified in healthcare analytics: institutions generate significant volumes of information, yet fragmented systems and limited analytical structures can prevent that information from becoming actionable intelligence.

Drawing on her nursing experience in both the United States and Nigeria, Dada has focused her work on the intersection of nursing practice, artificial intelligence, clinical risk recognition, care continuity, and patient-safety analytics.

Dada has also researched the prediction of hospital-acquired infection risk through the integration of nursing assessments, patient-care activities, and longitudinal electronic health-record data. This work examines how routinely generated nursing information can contribute to earlier identification of patients who may require closer clinical attention.

According to Dada, Africa’s expanding digital-health ecosystem presents an opportunity to build healthcare technologies that reflect the realities of its patients, nurses, healthcare institutions, and clinical environments.

“Africa should not simply consume healthcare technologies developed elsewhere,” she said. “We should contribute to designing intelligent clinical systems that understand our healthcare environments while producing solutions that can also improve patient safety globally.”

She stressed that artificial intelligence should complement rather than replace professional clinical judgment, with nurses remaining central to assessment, escalation, intervention, and evaluation of patient outcomes.

Dada also called for stronger collaboration among nurses, healthcare institutions, universities, technology developers, governments, and researchers to advance responsible clinical AI, nursing informatics, and patient-safety innovation.

The growing role of AI and predictive analytics in healthcare makes such investment increasingly important, particularly as health systems seek to transform clinical information into better decisions, operational improvements, and measurable patient outcomes.

“Healthcare innovation must ultimately be measured by what it does for the patient,” Dada said. “If technology helps nurses recognise risks earlier, preserve critical information, and respond more effectively, then we are moving toward a safer and more intelligent healthcare system.”
