To address the challenges posed by organic waste in Lagos State and its surroundings, an entrepreneur, Ridwan Akorede Mudashiru, has founded a new company, Sustainable African Solutions Limited to remove organic waste from landfills and mitigate its harmful environmental impacts.
Currently, the state generates about 15,000 tonnes of waste daily, with approximately 55 per cent of it being organic waste, which fills landfills and causes detrimental environmental effects.
This negative impact contributes to climate change and global warming.
Mudashiru believes that Sustainable African Solutions Limited, which he co-founded last year, is poised to change this narrative.
Speaking at the bimonthly PR Tea conference organised by Hustle Africa in Ikeja, Lagos, the biochemist stated that the company focuses on reducing organic waste management by collecting waste from restaurants, vendors, and homes.
He explained that their unique focus is organic waste, which they collect and reprocess into biogas and organic fertilizer at their facility.
Although, their company was officially incorporated in January 2025, they have been working since last year, obtaining licences, and establishing partnerships.
Mudashiru emphasised that they are not currently charging their 25 partners for waste collection, as they are focused on solving environmental problems and promoting clean energy solutions.
Additionally, they are in the process of applying for a licence from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to start collecting fees from households and hotels in the future.
The entrepreneur acknowledged the challenges of waste management, especially in Lagos due to its large population.
However, by focusing on organic waste , the company aims to address specific niches such as restaurants and food vendors.
While they face obstacles like lack of machinery and capital-intensive processes, they are working towards sourcing materials locally and eventually acquiring imported machinery to scale their operations.
Looking ahead, Mudashiru envisions expanding beyond Nigeria to other countries within the next decade.
He believes that Sustainable African Solutions Limited is not only contributing to environmental sustainability but also creating economic opportunities through innovative waste management practices.
By focusing on biogas production and organic fertiliser, the company aims to address global challenges such as climate change and promote sustainable development goals for a healthier future.
