2027: I will only do one term, says Amaechi

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said that he will only serve one term if he secures the ticket to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Amaechi, who recently resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the newly formed coalition of opposition parties, made this statement on Thursday during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme.

The former Minister of Transportation, who attended the unveiling of the interim executive of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja on Tuesday, said he is prepared to step down after four years in office as president to allow for rotation and stability.

“For now, the way Nigeria is, you must keep to that unwritten agreement that says south eight years, north eight years,” Amaechi said.

“I led a fight against the PDP government because there was an agreement that the government at that time would spend four years, but after four years, the government reneged, and I said, ‘No, that will be unfair.’

“That will lead to instability at its peak, as the north will react. So, the best thing to do is to support a northern candidate to continue the balance of power.

“Just like I will be telling the northerners that, no, the south should be allowed to complete their tenure — if the south isn’t allowed to complete their tenure, then I have made a mistake in supporting….”

When asked if he would only do one term if given the ADC ticket, Amaechi said, “Of course. If I get the ticket, I will only do one term.

“If not for the coalition agreement, the answer to whether I’ll run (as president) would have been an outright yes,” he said.

“But what did we agree? Everyone should keep aside their ambition. Let’s first get the platform. Let’s build it before talking about the presidency.”

Amaechi had earlier lamented that Nigeria is in a state of destruction and requires a complete overhaul. At the same time, he also accused the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of colluding to hijack the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

He further spoke about the state of affairs in the country, lamenting that things have become so dire that Nigerians can barely afford to eat what they want because there is no money to buy food, adding that inflation is at its peak.
