2027: Nasarawa SDP lawmaker urges voters to reject ethnic, religious politics

A member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly representing Lafia Central Constituency, Solomon Yakubu Akwashiki, has urged Nigerians—particularly voters in Nasarawa State to reject politicians who exploit religion, ethnicity, and tribal sentiments for political gain.
Akwashiki, who chairs the House Committee on Public Accounts, made the call while distributing empowerment items worth ₦70 million to constituents in Lafia.

He described identity-based politics as a major factor undermining Nigeria’s unity and development, warning that such tendencies pose a serious threat to national cohesion.
As part of his constituency intervention, the lawmaker distributed four Sharon buses, 22 motorcycles, and 60 grinding machines, alongside cash support for women and students.
He said the initiative reflects his commitment to improving the living standards of vulnerable groups and promoting self-reliance among constituents in Lafia/Obi Federal Constituency.

Akwashiki added that his interventions span borehole projects, electricity supply, employment opportunities, education support—including JAMB registrations—and healthcare initiatives.
He assured constituents who are yet to benefit from the programme that more interventions are underway.
The lawmaker urged voters to prioritise competence and integrity when electing leaders, stressing the need to move away from divisive politics.

He also declared his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Lafia/Obi in the 2027 elections under the platform of the Social Democratic Party.
The Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Danladi Jatau, commended Akwashiki for delivering democratic dividends to his constituents.
He noted that lawmakers in the state, despite belonging to different political parties, continue to work in unity for good governance.

The Speaker also praised the administration of Governor Abdullahi Sule and called on Nigerians to embrace unity, peace, and cooperation irrespective of political, ethnic, or religious differences.
Several stakeholders, including SDP National Chairman Sadiq Abubakar Gombe, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo, and former Information Minister Labaran Maku, praised Akwashiki for positively impacting his constituency.
They urged Nigerians to support Social Democratic Party candidates at all levels in the 2027 general elections, describing Akwashiki’s projects as people-oriented and impactful.

“This is the third time I am attending his empowerment programme. He is doing well and has his people at heart,” Jatau said.
“The essence of leadership is to show love to your people and appreciate them for their support and votes. That is what I am doing,” he said.
“When righteous people are in power, the people rejoice. I urge Nigerians to shun ethnic and religious politics,” he said.
