Six opposition political parties have begun consultations with presidential candidates as part of efforts to implement resolutions reached at the G100 Opposition Summit ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The consultations involved the national chairmen and national secretaries of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
The presidential candidates involved in the engagements are former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Governor Seyi Makinde of the APM, Peter Obi of the NDC, Prince Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and Donald Duke of the PRP. The meetings took place at different times within last two weeks.
According to a statement signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties, the consultations are aimed at advancing the resolutions of the G100 Opposition Summit, which called for sustained dialogue, stronger cooperation and a coordinated approach among opposition parties.
The summit’s resolutions also emphasised the need to defend multiparty democracy and protect the interests of Nigerians ahead of the next general elections.
The statement described the consultations as a practical step towards implementing the resolutions, providing a platform for party leaders and presidential candidates to discuss the framework for opposition cooperation, identify areas of common ground and consider ways to advance a shared democratic agenda.
It added that the discussions were driven by the belief that Nigeria’s challenges required serious engagement across party lines, with political leaders expected to prioritise the country’s future, citizens’ welfare and the credibility of elections over narrow political interests.
The consultations are ongoing, with further engagements expected to build on the G100 resolutions and the parties’ stated commitment to an organised opposition capable of working together in the national interest.
The coalition said Nigerians would be informed of substantive decisions and agreed next steps as the deliberations progressed.
