Attacks on Rivers APP secretariat spark fear, tension ahead of LG polls
Continuous attacks at the All Peoples Party (APP) Secretariat in new GRA, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, have sparked fears of renewed political violence ahead of the local council elections slated for October 5, 2024.
Though there have been growing concerns over unabated political crises and violence in the oil-rich state, the recent happenings are heightening tension and heating the polity in the state.
Barely three weeks after the APP secretariat was attacked with explosives suspected to be dynamited by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums on Tuesday, October 3, the secretariat has again been attacked, as one of the security men guarding the complex was killed.
When newsmen visited the victim in the hospital (hospital withheld), the victim was seen receiving treatment but could not speak.
However, some political observers in the state have linked the series of attacks on the APP office to insinuations that Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his followers are planning to pitch tents with the party sequel to the failure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the national and state levels to address the ongoing crisis in the party.
The people accused Fubara’s rivals of being behind the attacks on APP over the fear that the party may coast to victory in the council elections billed for October 5, 2024, among other elections.
