Buni-led APC committee moves to tackle internal conflicts, begins reconciliation drive

Governor Mai Mala Buni

• Tinubu to meet Kwankwaso over defection
• Gov’s aide says Kano gained nothing from opposition

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Committee on Strategy, Conflict Resolution and Mobilisation has commenced work with a renewed focus on resolving internal disputes and strengthening party unity across the country.

This was as President Bola Tinubu reportedly agreed in principle to meet with Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso after meeting his godson, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State.

The APC committee, chaired by Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, held its inaugural meeting yesterday, where members outlined a framework for addressing lingering disagreements, reconciling aggrieved stakeholders and preventing potential flashpoints within the party.

Governor Buni said the committee’s mandate was anchored on dialogue, inclusion and proactive engagement, stressing that sustainable peace within the APC could only be achieved through wide consultations and fairness.

Strong feelers indicate that Governor Yusuf might have facilitated the meeting between Tinubu and Kwankwaso to discuss his possible acceptance to defect alongside his godson.

Kwankwaso has met with Tinubu on many occasions; however, reports suggest that they have not agreed on certain conditions reportedly put forward by the former governor of Kano.

Recently, when discussions of Yusuf’s defection to the APC arose, Kwankwaso was quoted as saying that he would not defect to the APC without knowing what he and his supporters would gain.

However, an impeccable source within the APC indicates that Tinubu has agreed to meet with the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate of 2023 to discuss his possible acceptance to follow his godson to the APC.

In a release by the spokesperson of the Governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, his principal had sought the President’s support and cooperation to fast-track federal projects and ensure Kano benefits maximally from federal programmes and investments.
The release disclosed that Yusuf also used to formally brief the President on pressing challenges and opportunities in Kano, particularly the worsening insecurity in some local government areas.

Bature said Kano never gained anything from being in opposition; hence, the governor may defect to the APC.

He spoke on the Channels Television programme yesterday.

“If we go to the history of Kano and Nigerian politics, Kano has been in a complete opposition or in an eternal opposition with the centre.”
