Ebonyi South Youth Congress (ESYC) has faulted the zoning formula for the 2023 governorship election as announced by the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ebonyi South Youth Congress (ESYC) has faulted the zoning formula for the 2023 governorship election as announced by the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It maintained that it was wrong for the PDP to zone the 2023 gubernatorial slot to two senatorial zones, stressing that the concept of Abakaliki bloc no longer existed in the state.

In a statement issued yesterday by the President of ESYC, Uka Anya, the group urged leaders and Ebonyi people to be vigilant at all times and not allow agents of confusion to cause crisis in the state by resorting to dated zoning arrangement.

After its emergency meeting in Abakaliki, the group explained that its attention was drawn to an interview the Caretaker Chairman of the PDP, Fred Udogu, granted some journalists on September 23, 2021 in Abakaliki during which he stated that the PDP had zoned the 2023 governorship position to Abakaliki bloc, comprising Ebonyi North and Ebonyi Central senatorial districts.

“Since we read the news report in the newspapers, we went on to make enquires as to the authenticity of the report. Our finding is that no such decision was taken at any meeting or organ of the party. Maybe, Udogu was only expressing his personal opinion on the matter and not necessarily the party’s position.

“We restate our position that it will be wrong for the PDP to zone the governorship position to the Ebonyi North and Ebonyi Central senatorial zones without considering Ebonyi South Senatorial District.”

“There is nothing like Abakaliki or Afikpo blocs. The two blocs existed briefly after Ebonyi State was created in 1996. At that time, the Abakaliki bloc had six councils, while the Afikpo bloc had four councils,” he stated.

Anya further explained that shortly after the creation of the state Ebonyi, Ezza North and Ivo councils were created and the state was split into three senatorial zones and as such, anybody talking of Abakaliki and Afikpo blocs now was introducing sectionalism into the state.

He argued that since 1996, Ebopnyi State politics had been based on zoning among the three senatorial districts, adding: It is our view that the governorship slot should be thrown open to the three senatorial districts or we revert to Ebonyi North where the zoning started in 1999.

“The Ebonyi State PDP should do everything within its powers to harmonise all parts of the state to ensure unity, justice and equity ahead of the 2023 elections.
