Kwara North monarchs, leaders back Tinubu’s second term

President Bola Tinubu

Monarchs, political leaders, and stakeholders from Kwara North Senatorial District have thrown their weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term.
They also appealed to the President to support their quest to produce the next governor of Kwara State, citing what they described as a longstanding marginalisation of the district in the state’s leadership.

Speaking at a well-attended mega rally held at the Metropolitan Square in Ilorin, the stakeholders noted that since the creation of Kwara State in 1967, the district has only governed the state for 22 months under former Governor Shaba Lafiagi.
The speakers unanimously agreed that President Tinubu has performed well and deserves re-election. They urged him to assist the district in realising its “lofty” ambition of producing the next governor.
Speaking on behalf of Kwara North traditional rulers, the Emir of Lafiagi, Alhaji Muhammad Kudu Kawu, described the agitation for power shift as a reflection of the people’s long-standing aspirations.

According to him, the district has remained on the margins of the state’s top leadership despite its contributions to electoral victories and political stability.
He noted that Kwara North has consistently demonstrated loyalty and unity during elections, significantly contributing to the success of the ruling party, and therefore deserves consideration in the spirit of fairness and inclusiveness.
Kawu also appealed to the Chairman of the Kwara State Council of Traditional Rulers, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, to prevail on the state government and key stakeholders to support the emergence of a governor from Kwara North.

He further urged stakeholders in Kwara Central and Kwara South to cede the governorship seat to the North, stressing that such a move would promote unity and sustain the state’s reputation as the “State of Harmony.”
The emir added that wide consultations had been held across the state to build support for the Kwara North governorship bid.
Also speaking, former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly and two-time minister, Hon. Issa Bio Ibrahim, addressed the gathering on behalf of district leaders and stakeholders.

He announced that the district had resolved to support any of its sons who emerges as the gubernatorial candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with the aim of occupying the state’s top political office for the first time since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
Ibrahim added that all gubernatorial aspirants from Kwara North had agreed to work together toward achieving the goal.
He appealed to the people of Kwara Central and Kwara South to support the district’s ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In his remarks, a former state legislator and Commissioner for Information, Hon. AbdulMumin Katibi, presented statistical data showing that Kwara North has consistently produced the second-largest voting bloc in the state after Kwara Central.

He said the data underscored the district’s significant role in the emergence of past governors from other zones.
Katibi maintained that the time has come for other districts to reciprocate the support by backing Kwara North to produce the next governor of the state.
