The member representing Oshodi/Isolo 2 State Constituency n the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Jude Chukwuemeka Idimogu, has praised President Muhammadu Buhari for granting autonomy to state judiciary and legislatures in the country.

Idimogu, who spoke while reflecting on the imperatives of the celebration of June 12 as Democracy Day, urged the president to apply equal intervention in the education sector.

The lawmaker regretted that the quality of education in Nigeria was going from bad to worse, based on the pervading influence of corruption in the sector.

He recalled that prior to the advent of democracy in 1999, the educational sector was placed at number four in the national priority list, particularly in sectoral budgetary allocation.

“But now, it is totally different. Attention has shifted to other sectors that would add little or no meaning to the Nigerian child. I commend all the teachers and lecturers for their selfless services despite poor motivation,” he stated.

Idimogu, who is also the leader of Igbo speaking community in Lagos State, lamented that most teachers and lecturers in educational institutions now involve themselves in some other forms of business to make ends meet.

This, he noted, has divided their attention and focus, resulting in half-baked students, especially graduates, thereby giving problems to employers of labour and negating the development of democracy.

His words: “If education is considered as one of the top priorities of Nigeria, 70 per cent of the country´s politicians will not be sending their children overseas for studies.

“It is this nonchalant attitude that Nigeria education is going down the drain steadily, the same way poor infrastructure7facilities are hampering the proper development of the Nigerian child.”

The lawmaker also called on President Buhari to do more in the area of inclusion, particularly by integrating the igbo into the affairs of governance to reduce the claims of marginalization by the ethnic group.

Idimogu further challenged the Igbo to identify with the mainstream of Nigeria politics as a way of bringing themselves closer to governance.
