Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has warned workers and other users of government facilities against vandalism and acts capable of undermining public infrastructure, saying the destruction of government property poses a serious threat to the state’s development.

Oborevwori gave the warning while commissioning a multi-million-naira 110-office administrative complex constructed by the Oshimili South Local Government Council in Asaba, alongside a newly constructed access road at the council secretariat.

The office complex was built to provide accommodation for council workers as well as personnel of various federal agencies operating within the local government, including the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and National Orientation Agency (NOA).

The projects were named in honour of Governor Oborevwori and the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, reflecting the council’s recognition of their contributions to the development and administration of the state.

The governor, who was represented at the ceremony by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, said the provision of modern and functional working facilities was critical to improving staff morale, productivity and the quality of public service delivery at the grassroots.

According to him, a conducive working environment remained essential to effective administration, adding that local government employees and officials of federal agencies serving the people deserved facilities that would enable them to discharge their responsibilities efficiently.

He urged workers and other beneficiaries to take ownership of the infrastructure and ensure that the facilities were protected from vandals and other forms of abuse.

Oborevwori warned that vandalism of public property was not merely an act of destruction but a setback to government efforts to provide infrastructure and improve the living conditions of citizens.

He said the newly constructed access road would improve movement for workers, residents and visitors to the council secretariat while enhancing connectivity within the area.

He commended the council chairman, Hon. Obi Kelvin Ezenyili, for prioritising the improvement of working conditions and capacity building through projects targeted at improving service delivery.

The governor, however, stressed that the commissioning of the facilities must be accompanied by a strong culture of maintenance and protection.

Earlier, Ezenyili explained that the construction of the office complex was prompted by years of poor working conditions experienced by council employees, civil servants and personnel of federal agencies previously operating from dilapidated offices.

The council chairman said the poor condition of the former offices had negatively affected staff morale, efficiency and productivity, making the construction of a modern administrative complex imperative.

He said the new facility was designed to provide a more conducive environment for workers while also bringing essential government services closer to residents.

According to him, the complex includes a marriage registry and provisions for emergency response, while additional security arrangements had been put in place to protect workers, visitors and government property.

Ezenyili said the access road was equally designed to resolve longstanding challenges associated with movement into and around the council secretariat, thereby making access to government services easier for residents.
