Osun Assembly passes Islamic, traditional marriage bill, water users’ law

Civil societies decry the prolonged shutdown of courts in Osun

Osun State House of Assembly, yesterday, passed the Islamic and Traditional Marriages (Registration) Bill and the Water Users’ Association (Irrigation) Bill.

A statement by Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Assembly, Olamide Tiamiyu, stated that the lawmakers passed the “two landmark bills aimed at strengthening social institutions and promoting agricultural development across the state.”

Tiamiyu said that the bills were passed following the consideration of the House committee’s report and clause-by-clause adoption during the plenary, presided over by the Speaker, Adewale Egbedun.

He added that the bill, when signed into law, would empower farmers and rural communities to manage irrigation infrastructure sustainably, improve water distribution efficiency, and enhance crop yield and food security.

MEANWHILE, the Osun Civil Societies Coalition (OCSC) has called for immediate negotiations to resolve the ongoing industrial action by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Osun State branch.

The group urged the Chief Judge of the state, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), and the leadership of JUSUN to immediately return to the negotiation table without any delay and resolve the logjam.

The OCSC Chairman, Waheed Lawal, in a statement yesterday, lamented the development, urging all stakeholders to act swiftly in the interest of the state and its citizens. Lawal said that “justice delayed is justice denied,” noting that the people of Osun deserve a functional, fair, and responsive justice system.
