Following electoral irregularities that trailed the 2023 general elections, former National Vice-Chairman, South-South, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Ogidi, has stressed the need for President Bola Tinubu to urgently embark on electoral reforms.

Ogidi stated this while fielding questions from journalists in Warri, Delta State, saying there is a need to address issues with the Electoral Act. He cited what former President Umaru Yaradua did after the 2007 general elections.

Recall the 2007 general elections were faced with a crisis of legitimacy resulting in mass anger over massive electoral irregularities,President Yar’Adua thereafter promised to carry out fundamental electoral reform that would ensure future elections would be free and fair. Ogidi expressed concern over the lack of integrity among politicians. He said this unpleasant development constitutes part of the nation’s problems.

Saying that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has no solution to the nation’s problems, he expressed optimism that the PDP would put their house in order and return to power in 2027.

Ogidi also expressed concern over the nation’s rising debt portfolio which is in the tune of trillions of naira. Saying it appears the law of economics is not working in Nigeria, he added: “You don’t just suddenly remove fuel subsidy. It should have been phased. People are dying because of palliatives which shouldn’t be. Palliatives should cushion effects. Today, there is no more middle class. It is either you are poor or you are rich.”

He further urged Nigerian youths to shun vices, respect their parents and turn to God. Ogidi expressed worry over the high rate of drug addiction among youths in the country.

He observed that young men are on drugs and young girls have no fear of God. He said: “We are in deep trouble. Pastors are busy talking about prosperity and many of them are flamboyant.”
