Protests trail Kaduna council poll as El-Rufai pledges to probe allegations
Aggrieved youths in some communities in Kaduna have protested against the results of last Saturday’s local council poll in the state.
Among the communities involved were Narayi in Chikun local council area, kajuru, as well as Tudun Wada areas.
The protesters urged Governor Nasir El-Rufai to cancel the result of the election.
Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also circulated video clips showing how the local government elections were allegedly rigged.
They alleged that the poll was yet to be conducted in some areas because some government officials manipulated the results from their hotel rooms.
The Guardian leant that some of the Electronic Voting Machines that were used for the election in Narayi were abandon, with the election results remaining in hanging.
The results of elections in Chikun and Narayi were yet to be announced at the time of filing this report.
The results of Kajuru and Tudun Wada council areas are also said to have remained undeclared.
A chieftain of the PDP, Samaila Aliyu Makarfi, in a statement backed by video evidence, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of manufacturing the results that were announced.
The chieftain, who is a former Commissioner of Finance in the state, said the results did not reflect what transpired at the poll.
According to him: “In a desperate move by the ruling APC in Kaduna State to discredit Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi in particular, and the PDP state deputy chairman, as well as organising secretary, claimed that we lost in our wards.
Meanwhile, Governor El-Rufai has pledged to probe the alleged irregularities in the election.
He said steps would be taken to remedy them, while the lessons derived would be used to improve on subsequent elections.
