The Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed deep concern over the impending flood and its potential negative impact on the state’s residents.

The embattled lawmakers expressed their fears during their 47th legislative sitting on Monday, where they called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant government agencies to include Rivers State in their flood response plan.

The appeal was made following a motion moved by Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, who stated that the anticipated flood was a result of the Republic of Cameroon’s planned regulated release of water from the Lagdo Dam.

He noted that the move was made necessary by recent torrential rainfalls in West and Central Africa.

However, the lawmakers unanimously supported the motion, emphasizing the need to inform their constituents about the impending flood.

The Speaker, Amaewhule, lauded the motion’s intentions and mandated a joint committee to collaborate with NEMA, NDDC, and other government agencies to prepare for the disaster and provide aid to potential flood victims.

The joint committee, comprising the House Committee on Environment and House Committee on Emergency Relief, is expected to submit its report within a week.
