South East has produced a president in Peter Obi, says Tanko
National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, has boldly declared that the South East has “produced a president” in His Excellency Peter Obi, as he addressed a large crowd at the Obidient Movement symposium held at All Saints’ Cathedral in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Saturday
Tanko reflected on the historic significance of the moment, recalling his 2020 call for a president from the South East.
He shared how that vision, once a dream, has now become a reality with Peter Obi leading the charge for change in Nigeria.
“The South East has long fought for recognition and leadership, and today, with Peter Obi, we proudly say that the region has produced a president,” Tanko declared, acknowledging the tremendous impact Obi has had on the movement and the nation’s political landscape. He emphasized that Obi’s leadership is not just for the South East but for all Nigerians yearning for a better future.
Tanko took the audience through the roots of the Obidient Movement, which was born out of the urgent need for a shift in Nigeria’s political direction.
He highlighted the defining moment of the 2020 Lekki massacre, which sparked national outrage and united young Nigerians in their demand for justice and a reimagined Nigeria.
From that moment, the Obidient Movement, founded on the values of integrity, justice, and inclusivity, gained rapid momentum.
“The time to fight for a better Nigeria is now,” Tanko said, quoting Nelson Mandela’s famous words: “The time comes in the life of any nation when there remain only two choices – submit or fight.”
He clarified that the movement’s fight is not one of violence but of transformation—a fight for a new mindset, a new attitude, and a Nigeria that shifts from “Consumption to Production.”
Speaking directly to the people of the South East, Tanko commended their resilience, hard work, and indomitable spirit.
“The South East, though often isolated, has always been a region of productivity, resilience, and greatness. The time has come for us to rise and demand the Nigeria we deserve,” he said.
Tanko urged the gathering to unite for the common goal of a prosperous, equitable Nigeria, where every citizen has access to opportunities.
He called for solidarity across ethnic, religious, and party lines, emphasizing that unity is key to overcoming the challenges facing the country.
“We are all heirs to the struggles of our ancestors who fought for freedom. Today, we must continue that fight, not with arms, but with our voices and our votes,” he stated, adding, “Let’s stand together against injustice, corruption, and oppression.
“The Nigeria we seek is one where every citizen has access to quality education, healthcare, and equal economic opportunities.”
Tanko reinforced the message of hope and unity, urging Nigerians to work together to create a better future.
“Nigeria needs you as much as you need Nigeria,” he said. “Let’s rise together and build a nation where every citizen can thrive and succeed.”
