Wike rejects ‘double-faced’ tag, says ‘I’m no Janus, I stand by my choices’

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has come out strongly against comparisons that liken him to Janus, the two-faced Roman god often associated with duplicity.

Speaking during his recent media chat, Wike expressed deep irritation over the metaphor, describing it as a deliberate misrepresentation of his political choices.

“Let me say this very clearly — I take serious offence at being compared to Janus,” Wike stated firmly. “People throw that name around like it’s clever. It’s not. I’ve never pretended about where I stand.”

According to him, his actions during the 2023 elections were guided by principle, not deceit.

He recalled that, unlike others who participated in the PDP presidential primaries only to later back the candidate they had no faith in, he took a different path.

“I didn’t attend the primaries and then change tune. I made it clear from the start — I wasn’t supporting Atiku. That’s not double-faced. That’s called standing by your conviction.”

Wike emphasized that his choice to back President Bola Tinubu was based on sound political judgment and the belief that Tinubu had both the structure and capacity to win.

“I believed Tinubu would win, and I believed he could govern well. Time has proved me right. That was a political decision, not a betrayal,” he said.

Despite accepting an appointment in an APC-led government, Wike stressed that he never defected from the PDP. Rather, he has remained consistent in his fight against what he sees as injustice and impunity within the party.

“You can’t call someone Janus just because they refuse to support wrong decisions. If anything, I’ve been one of the most transparent voices in the PDP. I stayed to correct the rot — not to pretend.”

Wike’s rejection of the Janus label marks a clear attempt to reshape how his critics — and history — frame his political identity: not as a man of contradiction, but as one who makes hard decisions without apology.
