As part of its commitment to beautify the environment and create a conducive atmosphere for leisure, Anambra State Government has set machinery in motion for the planting of three million trees.

The Managing Director, State Leisure Parks and Street Beautification Agency, Cecilia Ify Atogu, who made this known in Awka, the state capital, stated that the essence is to improve the environment and achieve a healthy lifestyle for the inhabitants.

In addition, Atogu said the agency has taken pro-active measures towards the realization of the program by establishing a nursery for growing and provision of flowers and trees to members of the public.

She stated further that the agency is carrying out the mandate of Governor Willie Obiano to carry out landscaping and inter-locking of buildings at strategic areas.

Atogu noted that the traditional ruler of Onitsha, Obi Alfred Achebe was magnanimous to donate thirty ‘Jakarada’ trees to the agency to plant at the existing park to improve the aesthetics of the commercial city while appreciating those who have indicated interest to set up similar parks.

According to her, the agency has undertaken some development projects, including the establishment of Safe Gardens at the temporary site of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka after resettling motorcycle and tricycle operators to the Unizik”s Quadrangle Bus-stand to eliminate the menace of touts, hawkers and illegal squatters.
