NSE harps on regulatory effectiveness to promote infrastructure standards

Professional engineers have emphasised the need to enhance regulatory effectiveness towards advancing engineering practice and standards in the country. The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Mrs Margaret Oguntala, stressed the need for continuous capacity building, describing it as fundamental to sustaining the mission of engineering regulation in Nigeria.
Oguntala stated this at the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) Regional Engineering Stakeholders Summit on ‘Restructuring, Reforms, and the inauguration of the Lagos Regional Steering Committee (LRSC)’.
The NSE President lauded COREN for fostering stakeholders’ engagement, noting that such initiatives are crucial in reshaping perceptions, strengthening relationships, and promoting sustainable development.
Oguntala pointed out that the Lagos Regional Steering Committee would play a critical role in safeguarding the integrity of the profession, promoting adherence to established standards, and fostering a culture of excellence.
According to her, engineering regulation remains the bedrock of the profession and will ensure that the practices align with global best practices and contribute meaningfully to national development.
She expressed confidence in the ability of the committee members to enhance regulatory effectiveness and advance engineering practice and called on stakeholders to engage, collaborate, and work towards building a stronger, more resilient engineering sector that will serve as a catalyst for national progress.
Oguntala also commended the Lagos State government and State’s Building Control Agency (LASBCA) for their proactive approach in bringing together stakeholders to address professionalism in the built environment, noting that the choice of Lagos as the host for the maiden edition of the summit was highly appropriate.
She further pledged that NSE, along with other engineering associations, including the Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE), the Nigerian Society of Engineering Technicians (NISET), and the Nigerian Association of Engineering Craftsmen (NAEC) would drive the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) initiatives of COREN.
“Professional development is key to maintaining high standards in engineering practice, ensuring that Nigerian engineers remain globally competitive and well-equipped,” she added.
