Twenty-five years after its conception, the Lagos branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has finally embarked on an ambitious development of office blocks for it activities. Located at Abayomi Shonuga Crescent, Lekki, the proposed Bar Centre designed by Gaboon Associates Limited, is primed to be a modern facility which would host meetings and other law events.

The property, which foundation was laid last week boost of an auditorium style conference hall with sitting capacity of about 1000 persons and meeting committee rooms with optional two en-suite rooms for paying guests. The four level commercial building is planned on a lettable area of 1099.99 sqm with one car per 60sqm of occupancy.

The concept for the new NBA Bar Centre is to provide highly efficient , practical and world class infrastructure that allows for flexibility in some of the meeting rooms. The design further endeavours to provide comfortable spaces that promotes a productive and healthy environment for occupants.

The lifts and stair access cores are implemented as a cost effective approach to move the volume of people who would potentially attend conferences in the auditorium from an expansive reception area. The 2 cores provide access to all the levels as well as fire escapes and services reticulations. The uppermost level takes advantage of the views and provides executive offices, meeting facilities to senior management , and en-suite rooms for paying guests.

A mostly covered forecourt provides access to visitors being dropped off under cover with the layout of the forecourt optimized to maximize the number of parking spaces. The high entrance lobby generates a strong welcoming presence and opens up to the fore court. It accommodates a generous reception and waiting room. From the reception area the main cores are accessible after security induction and clearance.

With the major requirement for servicing a building of this scale, on a tight site, provision for generating house , water, sewage, refuse treatment plants and storage facilities, close to the frontal perimeter to facilitate the efficient installation and access of these services alongside the security building with provision for an almost invisible perimeter clear in fence with pedestrian gates and matching sliding gates.

Out going president NBA, Lagos chapter, Chukwuka Ikwuazom, expressed excitement at the reality of the project, 25 years after. He stressed that the venue where the branch holds meetings is no longer convenient because of the large number of attendees.“In the design of the center, there would be a large auditorium, library, hearing rooms for arbitration hearing. The bar center will serve the purposes of the branch when completed”, he said.

Chairman of the Bar Centre Project Committee, Wale Babalakin vowed that the committee would ensure accountability of money spent on the project. He noted that it would be a centre for generation of great ideas rather than a mere place of holding meetings. Adding that the project would be completed ahead of schedule and at reduced cost without compromising quality.

The architect and director, Gabonn Associates Gabriel Nwapa, said the design came from the blueprint given to the company and the need to produce an excellent service. He however noted that the basic challenges faced was in accommodating over a thousand people and parking space, but the solution would be to elevate the building to get adequate parking space underneath.
