Five years after the award of contract for the School of Engineering in the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, the authorities have expressed concern on the abandonment of the job by the contractor.

Immediate past Rector of the institution, Prof Mike Iloeje alleged during his valedictory session that the contractor abandoned site for more than two years after receiving payment.

According to him, the contract was awarded in 2010 to Kes Global Nigeria Limited in 2010 as part of the N1billion special intervention project by Tetfund and was supposed to be delivered in May 2012.

He said the matter has been reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). “Four projects were given along with the School of Engineering – the library, School of Technology, Centre for Entrepreneurial studies, while those ones have been completed, this one still lingers. Our last evaluation is that it is 65 per cent completed as you can see for yourself.

“The contract duration was supposed to be 24 months. The contractor abandoned site for almost two years. We don’t owe him a penny. If this building is completed, it can quadruple the enrolment of students in engineering.

“This building will contain all the six departments of the School of Engineering,” he said.

According to him, “some of the contractors tried to push me into taking legal action, but legal action is a recipe for abandoned project because once you do it, construction will stop until the matter is resolved in court. I refused to take them to court rather I tried to engineer them to do the job and that was how I was able to complete these ones.”

Contacted however, senior officials of Kes Global Nigeria Limited refuted the allegation.

The company claim it had not been fully mobilized for the job, adding “We do jobs based on funds made available to us”.
