To restore order and sanity to the state’s urban landscape, the Rivers State government has issued a stern warning to individuals and organisations engaging in unauthorised development practices.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Evans Bipi, expressed strong displeasure over the rampant disregard for laws governing physical planning and urban development, citing instances of building without government-approved plans, renovation without permits, and street trading in unauthorised areas.

Other unauthorised practices mentioned include littering, erection of illegal structures, conversion of public spaces to motor parks, building on natural water channels, and damaging public infrastructure.

These actions, according to the Commissioner, not only deface Port Harcourt, the state capital but also undermine the urban renewal initiatives of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In response, the commissioner issued a seven-day ultimatum to all violators, warning that failure to comply would result in severe government actions, including impoundment of goods, possible arrest, and prosecution.

He noted that all car dealers operating on roadsides, lay-bys, and other public spaces should relocate to authorised areas as failure to comply will result in the impoundment of their vehicles.

Bipi further advised all individuals living and doing business in the state, as well as corporate organisations, particularly those intending to carry out construction or renovation work, to obtain necessary approvals and permits from the ministry, as unpermitted development and renovation will no longer be tolerated.

IN a related development, Bipi has convened a strategic meeting with chairmen and members of Special Teams on Building Plan Compliance. The meeting held last week, aimed to advise and strengthen the teams for effective discharge of their duties, ensuring seamless compliance with building plans and regulations.

According to a statement issued by Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Commissioner, Emeka Kalu, the meeting was attended by key stakeholders.

The commissioner emphasised the importance of building plan compliance, stating that the meeting was crucial in enhancing the enforcement drive and coverage of the special teams. He noted that the teams play a vital role in promoting urban development in the state.

Bipi announced the immediate lifting of the suspension on the Chairman, Special Team C on Verification of Building Plan and Development Control, Mr Emmanuel Dimkpa. Dimkpa is expected to return to his normal role, enhancing the enforcement drive and coverage of the team for effective service delivery.
