BBNaija stars place popularity over talent- Mayowa Adenekan, Talent manager

Talent manager and digital marketer, Mayowa Adenekan has averred that Big Brother Naija stars often place popularity over talent.

Speaking in a chat with Saturday Beats, Adenekan said: “Different people enter the Big Brother Nigeria (BBN) show for one reason or the other. Some showcase their acting, cooking skills, comedy talent, while others leverage the platform to promote their music. Whatever their reasons maybe, the primary purpose is for marketing.

However, over the last six seasons of Big Brother, we have witnessed three housemates of the show who tried music after emerging as the winner of the show ranging from Efe in the year 2017, Laycon in 2020 to Whitemoney in 2021. This clearly shows that most of them place popularity over talent, which is a branding problem. It is easy to brand a well talented artist. You cannot sell without a good content, that’s how to take advantage of the number of followers you would have accumulated for being the winner of the show”.

Sharing his thoughts on the musical ingenuity of BBNaija winners who morphed into music artistes, he said: “Well, listening to their songs I carried out my evaluation bearing in mind the style, lyrics, and their approach. Efe the 2017 Big Brother Nigeria winner released a single soon after he got out of the show. The first thing one will notice about Efe’s song is the confusion of not settling with the fact that he is a rapper or singer.

Efe’s songs are only best when he features another artiste because on his own, it’s just one dull song after another. While Laycon on the other is a superstar in the making. Beforehand, he had exhibited great music potential on the show. His coming out as an artiste was not a surprise. The budding star seems to know his way around words and how to play with them.

Whitemoney is not a musician, music is not his priority. It doesn’t come as a surprise that his songs don’t meet so many people’s expectations such as good lyrics, great vocals, and music style”.
