Fahda Romie, Nation Boss, others tops 5 Breakout Jamaican Artists To Watch in 2021
Despite the fact that there were no concerts or live performances this year, several new and young Dancehall musicians drew attention and are ready for breakthrough careers in 2021.
These five musicians to watch are some of Jamaica’s new buzzworthy acts, who have been gaining in popularity as well as charting well on numerous streaming platforms among Jamaican audiences, most notably Apple Music, YouTube, and Audiomack.
We feature Fahda Romie, Nation Boss, Yaksta, 10Tik, and Caano.
1. Fahda Romie
Fahda Romie, born and reared in Jamaica, is a “quasar” dedicated to conveying his journey and experiences through musical art forms. Fahda Romie’s sound is defined by tough, gritty Jamaican dancehall trap music blended with American rap/trap styles, UK drill patterns, and afrobeats.
Fahda Romie then continued her adventure by collaborating with a skilled Jamaican producer, Codelank, on amazing tunes in a variety of genres. The kid chose to assemble some of the tracks for his EP, which he will release on December 31st, 2020, to commemorate the anniversary of his first successful release, “Recommend,” which was released on December 31, 2019. Recommend, Vortex, Quasar Freestyle, Program, Sheikh up di place, Drilling, and East Rave are among the songs on the EP.
Fahda Romie has subsequently released many tunes and is about to unleash his summer anthem “Al Khail Road,” which has received positive feedback from his social media followers. Fahda Romie, understanding the wider picture, will continue to improve his art and focus on developing his community through the creation of his unique and distinctive sound.
2. Nation Boss
Nation Boss, the most recent addition to this list, is generating a lot of excitement with his Humans single, which has catapulted the newbie into the spotlight. The song came after the artist’s social media freestyle, which went viral and enhanced his standing among his musical peers.
Nation Boss is currently working harder than ever to carve himself a niche in the sometimes-overcrowded local music landscape. Using the newfound exposure he is receiving from substantial press coverage, the deejay is making deliberate measures to expand his fan base and get his music into the ears of the masses.
Nation is now tasked with harnessing Humans’ heightened curiosity in order to carve out a space for himself amid the ranks of artists aspiring to become fixtures on the local music scene.
3. Yaksta
Yaksta has received a lot of attention for one of his most recent hits, Ambition, which emphasizes making smart decisions that lead to financial independence. The musician states unequivocally that casual attitudes and spending are counter-intuitive to increasing generational prosperity.
In several of his music videos, the multi-talented singer also shows off his performance abilities. In videos like the one for the tune Boogie Woogie, the musician sometimes shows off his acting abilities in skits or his more goofy side in dance and airy, entertaining lyrics.
Notably, in one of Yaksta’s more contemplative singles, Home, he delves into the complexities of living below the poverty line. The single’s lyrics analyze basic human wants and needs within the context of moral compasses that shape people’s natural thought processes and general behaviors.
Humans, the Yaksta’s social criticism track, is arguably one of their most important musical pieces. The lyrics give a manifesto for the greater part of 6 minutes, outlining the effects of lifetime abuses meted out to ‘Mother Earth.’ The Bush Lawd’s musical repertoire even contains a love ballad dedicated to his homeland, appropriately titled St Mary.
4. Skeng
Deejay Skeng is another newcomer aiming to make his mark on Jamaica’s music industry mural. The deejay has steadily created a deluge of recordings on which he primarily sings hardcore rhymes over distinct Trap fusion-styled sounds that might easily assimilate into various North American rap genres.
Skeng, like some of his fellow music business peers, has managed to establish and adopt a careless technique that allows him to churn out hard-hitting, lyric-driven singles – like Brrrp, Ypree, Burna, and Duppy Dem – that has resulted in an unmistakable hardcore body of work thus far.
Like many other deejays before him, the youthful artist places long-standing focal points of the generally ignored violent societal effects of ‘gangsta’ existence on a pedestal for broad observation.
Skeng’s lyrics are direct and straightforward.
Skeng, however, is not exclusively about ‘badniss,’ as the deejay also has tunes – such as Hot Topic – that cleverly incorporates being smartly clothed with partying and ‘braffing’ into his customary more explicit hardcore lyrical design.
5. Fadagad
Fadagad was a rising talent who was beginning to establish himself among the next generation of deejays who are projected to play important roles in Jamaica’s local music industry until his untimely death.
The deejay’s most recent and biggest track, Jah Guide, was released on the same day he was assassinated. Ironically, the track’s reverend lyrics reflect the general problems that are ever-present in daily life, as well as the belief and trust that there is a greater power who guides and guards us along the pathways we travel.
However, Fadagad’s lyrics, like those of other deejays, emphasize the terrible underbelly of the violent networks that have spread their tentacles over Jamaica. Haunted & Wanted is one such tune, with lyrics that are among his more detailed descriptions of the ‘badniss’ culture that pervades the island; a culture that its players follow with little to no consequence.
Similarly, Fadagad made songs like Run Up Town and Cya Run that use metaphors to describe clearly violent deeds.
However, the deejay managed to balance out the ‘bus gun’ narrative with songs like Perseverance, which supports hopefulness and tenacity in one’s approach to life and living.
