For Melody Morgan, founder of Mel’s Glam, makeup artistry goes beyond enhancing appearance; it is an avenue for creative expression, experimentation, and visual storytelling. Driven by her passion for beauty, fashion, and art, she continues to explore the possibilities of makeup across conventional glam and editorial artistry.
In this interview, Morgan discusses her journey into the profession, the inspiration behind Mel’s Glam, the distinction between editorial makeup and conventional glam, and her vision for building a brand recognised for creativity, versatility, and intentionality.
Tell us about yourself and how you got into makeup artistry.
My name is Melody Morgan, and I’m the founder of Mel’s Glam. I got into makeup artistry because of my passion for beauty, fashion, and creativity. I enjoyed experimenting with different looks, and that interest eventually led me to learn the craft and develop my skills. Over time, I realised that makeup was something I wanted to pursue professionally and use as a way to express my creativity.
What inspired you to establish Mel’s Glam?
Mel’s Glam is a way for me to express my passion for makeup and creativity. I wanted to build something that reflects my interests and gives me room to explore different styles of makeup. For me, it is not just about offering a service but also about developing my skills, creating memorable looks, and building a brand people can associate with creativity and intentionality.
What makes your approach to makeup artistry different?
I pay attention to the details and the overall look I’m trying to achieve. I believe that makeup should be intentional, whether it is a soft glam look for a birthday, an Owambe look, or something more creative for an editorial shoot. I want to understand the direction of the look and make choices that bring it together. I also enjoy exploring different styles rather than limiting myself to one particular look.
You have a particular interest in editorial makeup. What attracts you to it?
What attracts me most is the freedom to experiment and create something unusual. Editorial makeup allows me to explore colours, shapes, and different ideas in ways that go beyond conventional glam. I also love that makeup can tell a story. You’re not just creating a beautiful look; you’re contributing to a concept and helping to communicate an idea through the finished image.
How would you explain the difference between editorial makeup and conventional glam?
For me, the biggest difference is the purpose behind the look. Conventional glam, such as makeup for birthdays and weddings, is usually centred on the client’s desired appearance and the occasion. Editorial makeup gives you more room to explore concepts, experiment with techniques, and create something that communicates a particular idea or mood. Both require skill, but the creative direction can be quite different.
What inspires your creativity when creating a makeup look?
Fashion, art, and colour inspire me a lot. I enjoy seeing how different colours and elements can work together to create something interesting. I also love the freedom that comes with experimenting. Sometimes, the excitement is in trying an approach I haven’t explored before and seeing how the idea develops into a finished look.
What has your experience as a makeup artist been like so far?
My experience has given me opportunities to work across different styles, including soft glam for birthdays, Owambe makeup, and editorial shoots. Each experience allows me to approach makeup differently and continue learning. I’m still growing as an artist, and I see every opportunity as a chance to improve my skills, explore new ideas, and become more confident in my creative direction.
How do you approach creating a look for a client or a creative shoot?
I start by understanding what the look needs to achieve. For a client, I consider their preferences, the occasion, and the overall look they want. For an editorial shoot, I pay attention to the concept and the creative direction. From there, I can think about the colours, techniques, and details that would work best. I believe being intentional from the beginning makes a difference to the final result.
How do you balance what clients want with your own creative vision?
I believe listening is important. When working with a client, I want to understand their preferences and give them a look they feel comfortable and confident wearing. At the same time, my creativity helps me make thoughtful suggestions when needed. With editorial work, there may be more room to experiment because the concept itself often calls for something different. For me, it is about understanding the purpose of the work and knowing how best to approach it.
What challenges have you encountered as a makeup artist?
Like any creative profession, makeup artistry requires continuous learning and improvement. Developing your skills, finding your creative voice, and building a recognisable body of work all take time and effort. I’m learning to keep exploring different ideas, remain open to new experiences, and challenge myself creatively rather than become too comfortable with what I already know.
How do you see makeup artistry contributing to Nigeria’s fashion and creative industry?
Makeup plays an important role in fashion, photography, film, and other creative productions. It helps bring concepts to life and contributes to the overall visual presentation of a project. I believe there is room for makeup artists to explore more creative approaches, collaborate with other professionals, and showcase different perspectives through their work. Editorial makeup, in particular, offers opportunities to experiment and contribute to visual storytelling.
What do you hope people will associate with Mel’s Glam?
I want Mel’s Glam to be known for outstanding creativity, versatility, and intentionality. I want people to see that I can explore different styles while still putting thought into the details of each look. Whether it is soft glam or editorial makeup, I want the work to reflect my dedication to the craft and my willingness to keep exploring new creative possibilities.
Where do you see yourself and Mel’s Glam in the future?
I want to continue growing as a makeup artist, developing my creative style, and taking on opportunities that challenge me. I’m particularly interested in exploring editorial makeup further and working on more creative projects. In the long term, I want Mel’s Glam to become a recognised name associated with distinctive artistry, versatility, and a strong creative vision.
What would you like people to understand about makeup artistry?
I would like people to understand that makeup artistry involves more than applying products. There is technique, planning, creativity, and attention to detail involved in creating a look. Makeup can enhance someone’s appearance, but it can also be used to explore ideas, express creativity, and tell stories. That creative side is something I want to continue exploring through my work.
As Nigeria’s fashion and creative industries continue to provide opportunities for artistic expression, Melody Morgan is keen to explore the role makeup can play in shaping visual narratives and bringing creative concepts to life. Through Mel’s Glam, she hopes to build a distinctive brand that embraces versatility, attention to detail, and a willingness to experiment. For Morgan, the journey is one of continuous learning, creative discovery, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of makeup artistry while remaining true to her evolving vision.
