As the rainy season intensifies here in Nigeria, it is time to plan your outings and be intentional about keeping warm and safe.
Check Weather Forecast Daily
A lot of Nigerians don’t completely trust the efficacy of weather forecasting. It is generally believed that whether it rains or shines, it is solely a decision by the Almighty – God of the rain and sunshine, God of the heaven and earth.
Regardless, check the forecast as these weather scientists predict based on meteorological and scientific knowledge through technology, and because God is the author of knowledge, more often than not, the weather forecasts are usually correct.
Dress Up As Desired But Take an Umbrella
If the forecast says rain or scattered thunderstorms take a big umbrella. If you’re not mobile, you may want to consider throwing a raincoat in a bag just in case it gets heavier than predicted. If it says light shower, a small umbrella should do.
Don’t Drive Into The Storm
Driving in a heavy downpour comes with a lot of caution and concentration. If your destination is a flood-prone area, you may want to avoid driving into it when it’s raining cats and dogs. More importantly, if you spot a heavy flood ahead of you, regardless of how big, strong and reliable you think your vehicle is, don’t get tempted for a showoff as the flood ahead might be bigger and deeper than what it looks. Just wait it out or return to anywhere that keeps you and your vehicle safe.
Evacuate Flood-Prone Areas
This is the part where people who live in flood-prone areas are advised to evacuate their homes during above-normal rainfall and flash flood until the rain abates.
Stay Where You Are On Stormy Nights
If a heavy downpour catches you away from your home at night, stay where you are or find somewhere/a hotel/motel around where you are to pass the night.
