‘Our donations to Argungu is to promote tourism’


In support of the just concluded Arugungu International Fishing Festival, the Nigeria Shippers Council has presented cash prize of N1m to Abubakar Yari, who won the fishing contest with a fish weighing 78kg. The council also gifted N750,000 to Yahyah Magaye, who came second with 75kg fish, and N500,000 to Maiwake Sani from Silami from Sokoto State, who emerged 3rd with a fish weighing 70kg.

Speaking to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi at the 25th edition of the fishing festival, which returned after years of hiatus, the Executive Secretary of the council Dr. Hassan Bello said the gesture is to motivate the fishermen and farmers, as it’s one way to rescue the younger ones.

“The contribution is part of the company support towards promoting tourism and culture; we the shippers Council worked on waterways. We salute the Governor of Kebbi State Bagudu, Emir of Arugungu and the entire people of Kebbi State for their sacrifice and success of the event” he added.


Responding, the Kebbi State Governor Senator Atiku Abubakar Bagudu assured the people of Arugungu that his administration would continue to support the festival and promote the tourism industry in the State.

“I thank President Muhammad Buhari, Emir and the main organiser of the programme for the successful hosting of the Arugungu International Fishing Festival; we are comitted to the promotion of the tourism and cultural sector of the country,” he said.

Also speaking, the Emir of Arugungu, Alhaji Smaila Mera, thanked President Muhammad Buhari, Senate President, Ministers and other Governor from various state for gracing the occasion.
