Thrills, frills and magic of 2017 AFWN

It was an iconic display of beauty and splendour at last weekend’s 4th edition of the Africa Fashion Week Nigeria (AFWN). This year’s AFWN featured 60 designers and 40 exhibitors selected across Africa to celebrate and showcase creativity on a platform that turns creativity into sustainability.

Held at the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, celebrities were not in short supply as they stormed the venue to lend glamour to the event. Some notable faces include Denrele, co-host for the event, Chika Ike, Toyin Lawani, BBN’s Debbie Rise (who modeled for a designer) among others.

Over the course of two days, the audience was treated to a series of breathtaking couture on display as old, new and upcoming designers strived to outdo each other in designs. Ankara dresses were given fresh new looks and ankara bags were looking jazzed up and different.

Themed  ‘Celebrating the Vibrant Pulse of Africa’, this year’s edition aimed to stay true to African roots while showcasing Africa’s rich cultural heritage as much as possible. Due to this reason, many designers worked with Ankara and other local fabrics, mixing them up with all manner of accessories and designs, leaving the audience stunned.

Some of the designers that walked the runway include, Alexander II Akande, Blingshiki, Audree Hope, Neo Pele Concept, Keeks, Kola Kudus, Micserah, Ninikelia, Sally Bawa, Stitches, Signature Secret and Veba Fabrics. Others are Ara Ewa, Step Up, Zainab A Bridals, Lamzie, Dresses By Aloli, Fadesomi and Oma Couture. All the designs were from their respective latest collections.

Top designers Nigeria’s Zizi Cardow, and Nipo Skin from Ghana also thrilled the audience, showcasing the new Da Viva Collection and iconic ABC Wax. Highlights of the evening include the relaunching of ABC Wax, a fabric that has been in existence for over 100 years.

The Group Marketing Manager of Nichemtex ,Mr Stephen Dutton, said: “ABC relaunch in Nigeria has a new collection designed in England, made in Ghana. Our objective is to collaborate with established and upcoming designers to help develop the Africa fashion industry and textile business. We decided to reconnect with our existing customers and show iconic designs, new collections, and present ABC to our new generation that don’t know much about it. Our strategic partner for this show is the
Swarovski, to help you find the perfect crystals to your creative work.

Public Relations Officer of Nichemtex Company, Mrs Carol Arhere, disclosed: “The reason why we have Daviva and ABC Wax is that Daviva is a print and ABC wax is something we have known over time when it comes to heritage. This is something our fathers and mothers have worn long time ago. That is what we have produced, having as ABC wax, and the reason why it is wax is because both sides are printed on. Daviva is produced for the younger age range, but presently ABC wax is designed in England, printed in Ghana, distributed in Nigeria, but Daviva is printed, produced in Nigeria designed in England.

The company consists of Nichemtex House of brands such as Da Viva, Excellence, Nichem VIP and Akosombo House of Brands- ATL, Inspiration, Ospice and ABC. Dignitaries at the event include the Chairman for AFWN HRM Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, and Grand patron Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi among others.
