Lagos agog as golden jubilee celebration ends with star-studded concerts

Lagos as the commercial nerve centre and entertainment hub not just for Nigeria, but sub-Saharan Africa, has been beehive with activities following the golden jubilee celebration of the State.

The state government as part of activities for the celebration will tomorrow host the best of Nigerian traditional and contemporary popular musicians and fashionistas to an anniversary concert to round off the unprecedented year-long activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Lagos State.

Billed to hold at the waterfront, Bar-Beach the concert is expected to draw thousands of Lagosians from all walks of life to the venue including the State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, members of the State Executive Council, members of the State House of Assembly as well as party chieftains and corporate players from the organised private sector.

Artistes confirmed to grace the show include the juju music maestros, King Sunny Ade, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey as well as the legendry Highlife Patriarch, Sir Victor Olaiya. Also expected are star Fuji artistes like Adewale Ayuba, Abass Akande Obesere and Wasiu Alabi (Pasuma Wonder). 

Other artistes billed to perform at the star-studded concert are Davido, Phyno, Olamide, Humble Smith, Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh, Partoranking, Banky W, Runtown, Vanessa, M.I, Eedris Abdulkareem, Mr. Eazi, and DJ Spinall.

The concert according to the State Commissioner for Information, Steve Ayorinde, will serve as an ecstatic climax for the year-long activities that have been celebrating the cultural essence of the State since May 27, 2016.

“It will also serve as a bridge between the activities for Lagos @ 50, which will formally come to a close with an anniversary ball on Saturday May 27 and the second year anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration on Monday, May 29 2017,” he said. 

He stated that the Golden Concert would further attest to the State Government’s commitment to the promotion of tourism, arts, culture and entertainment and how musicians and creative artistes, like fashion designers and models, help in sustaining a vibrant, creative economy that has made Lagos State the cynosure of all eyes in Africa.

Meanwhile, another concerts will go down in the city simultaneously with Golden Concert. This include, the Lasgidi Allstar Concert billed for the Hard Rock Café, Victoria Island.

Powered by 411 Entertainment, the concert tagged music meets tourism, boost of nation’s next rated artistes like Skales, Timi Dakolo, CDQ, Sean Tizzle, Erigga, Praiz, Simi, Solidstar, Brymo, Dreama, and Big Brother Naija Allstar among other talented acts.

The Lasgidi Allstars, founded by Akpor Gbemre in 2007 as Ikeja Allstars is an event series that marks the success of Afro-Pop and Hip Hop culture in the ever growing Lagos music scene.

Yesterday, a base youth organisation in the state, Jubilee Praise Crew has commended governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his sterling performance and achievement in the last two years.
  
The group in appreciation of the administration’s performance held a 12-hour free musical concert at Grandeur Events Centre, Oregun, Ikeja, featuring King Sunny Ade, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey and Ayangbajesu alongside other star artistes.
   
According to the group co-ordinator, Pastor Femi Okunuga the musical concert was aimed at bringing Lagosians together especially youths to join the state government in celebrating the golden jubilee anniversary of the state in recognition of good performance of the governor and his predecessors in the last 50 years.

  
He said, “Jubilee Praise Crew is pleased with the achievements that the Akinwunmi Ambode administration has recorded in areas of security, peaceful co-existence, urban renewal and infrastructural developments, transportation, sustainable environment and many more.”
  
“The free musical concert will feature 30 different artistes and this is in appreciation of Ambode’s leadership skills especially the enabling environment that his administration has created for youths to develop and maximise their potentials. We feel it was important to identify with the success story of the state government and contribute our quota to the on going Lagos @ 50 celebrations,” he added.
  
The concert, which had the governor, Akinwunmi Ambode in attendance as the special guest of honour along side other top government functionaries will kick-off at exactly 9am and ended at 9pm.
