Flawsome Ladies

Showmax debuted its second original drama series, Flawsome, November 10, 2022 and gave us a glimpse into the lives of the four leading ladies – Ifeyinwa, Dolapo, Ivie, and Ramat – in the first episode. Titled Meet The Girls, the episode took us through their friendship and professional lives.

As the story continues to unfold, we have been introduced to other characters associated with these ladies and have seen them work through their personal and career battles layered with a truck load of emotions.

Love being inarguably the strongest of the emotions, has been front and centre on the show. We’ve seen love and the other side of love in the romantic life of Ivie. While the fashion intern has not been lucky in terms of work, she drew the worst of the lot in her relationship with Poju.

In the first six episodes, we watched her support a deadbeat boyfriend while struggling with work and ‘sapa’. We also saw her struggle to cut him out of her life. It was frustrating for her friends – and us – watching her take him back after every mess-up against their advice. We kept asking, “why?” How hard could it be to cut him out of her life?

Enter the seventh episode and Ivie had her fill of her boss, Lerato and Poju, and it was pure joy to watch her cut them out of her life. Amidst the happiness, we learnt a valuable lesson. Often, people are used to toxicity that it becomes a part of us and needs a self-awakening to cut away. Loved ones can only advise and support.

For Dolapo and Ifeyinwa, their friendship is not the only thing they have in common. The PR guru and Tech sis have their hands full trying to ensure they have successful careers in male-dominated sectors. Dolapo is trying to launch a senator’s career. Ifeyinwa wants to save her father’s company from demise. They are both fighting former friends turned enemies.

Ranti is bent on destroying Dolapo’s campaign to help Senator Jubril’s contest as repayment for her taking away his opportunity during their intern days. On the other hand, Timi, Ifeyinwa’s ex-boyfriend and the current CEO of her father’s company, is the voice of doubts and pessimism in her head. To him, the company is on the brink of extinction, and the only way to save her family’s legacy is to sell it. In between their drama with both men, it’s painful to see both powerful women riddled with doubt, unfulfillment, and guilt for fighting back.

One of the things we love most about Flawsome is how it touches on real-life issues and stories. The drama series addresses real-life concerns such as child and women trafficking and prostitution. To an extent, the drama series addresses the loopholes in the Nigerian police system. Ramat is our in-house fighter and hero. The human rights activist’s passion for fighting for the disadvantaged runs deep. She would fight any and every one to save her girls, as she calls them.

Interestingly, her passion stems from the sexual abuse she witnessed her mum suffer when she was a child. Years later, the event still shapes and affects her adult life. Her fight to stop the same from happening to other women shows that abuse – any form of it – runs deeper than most people think. One way or the other, it leaves an indelible mark.

Each lady has had and fought their fair share of battles, but the one constant thing we have seen going for them is their unbreakable bond of friendship. It shows that nothing beats having true friends to hold during the thickest and thinnest moments.

Flawsome is heating up, and the drama continues in episode 9 on Showmax on Thursday, January 5th. Sign up at www.showmax.com.
