Hydrogeologist Omojasola Juwon Ezekiel has been recognised for his contributions to improving access to safe drinking water in rural communities across Oyo State through sustainable groundwater development and solar-powered water supply projects.

Working with the Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency in collaboration with UNICEF, Omojasola has participated in the planning, investigation, design and implementation of groundwater projects aimed at providing potable water to underserved rural and semi-urban communities. His research and technical expertise have focused on developing sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s rural water challenges.

According to information made available on his work, the projects implemented between 2019 and 2023 have provided clean water to several remote communities that previously depended on contaminated streams, seasonal water sources and unsafe hand-dug wells for their daily needs.

The report stated that the researcher adopted hydrogeological investigations and groundwater modelling to identify suitable locations for boreholes, a process that has improved the success rate and durability of water supply projects. It added that the integration of solar-powered pumping systems has enhanced the reliability and sustainability of the schemes.

The interventions, according to the report, have improved access to clean water for drinking, cooking, sanitation and other domestic uses. Communities benefiting from the projects have also reported improved sanitation practices and a reduction in water-related diseases.

Beyond water infrastructure, Omojasola has also promoted community education on water hygiene, sanitation and the proper maintenance of water facilities. He has worked with public health professionals and community leaders to encourage sustainable management of the water schemes in the benefiting communities.

The report noted that the research and field interventions align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which seeks to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Speaking on Omojasola’s contributions, Senior Hydrogeologist at Oyo RUWASSA, Obideyi Felix, described him as a committed professional whose efforts have positively impacted many communities across the state.

Felix said, “Omojasola’s work reflects unwavering dedication and exemplary leadership which continue to transform lives by improving access to clean water, better health and sustainable livelihoods. His contributions serve as an inspiration to a new generation of hydrogeologists.”

The report concluded that Omojasola’s research demonstrates how hydrogeological innovation, supported by strategic partnerships and community participation, can strengthen water security, improve public health and contribute to sustainable socio-economic development in Nigeria.
