The 2023 edition of the Government College, Ughelli (GCU) Relays, will be held on November 18 instead of its regular first week. This is in deference to the national off–cycle elections in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa states.

President-General Worldwide of the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA), Chief Albert Akpomudje (SAN), confirmed the
November 18 date, just as he disclosed that the 5th edition will raise the bar in terms of competitiveness, glitz, and glamour, as over 500 athletes have been invited from 50 schools across Nigeria.

The will converge at the NNPC -SHELL built and donated modern tartan tracks at the school’s athletics fields.

“Having gone through and experienced the geometric growth of this intercollegiate competition, we intend to raise the bar at
this anniversary edition,” Chief Akpomudje stated.

He added: “The first edition was well organised by erstwhile PGWW, Prof Oritsegbemi Omatete, and the last three editions by Arc Charles Majoroh, meaning that I am condemned to not only improve on their performances but push the annual event to a higher level.”As with tradition, massive entries have started pouring in from schools, Pan Nigeria with Hussey College and Urhobo College as early birds.

Star athlete and Victor Ludorum winner of the maiden edition, Godson Oghenebrume (Afiesere Grammer School) has continued to blossom into a world-class track predator.

The GCU Relays, which is meant to rekindle Intercollegiate rivalry amongst secondary schools Nationwide, is the brainchild of the GCUOBA, Worldwide.
