2023 Nigeria Cup golf tournament set to tee off with fun and fanfare
This year’s Nigeria Cup, a tournament established to celebrate the nation’s independence anniversary, will tee off at the Golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 on Saturday with fun and fanfare, says Chairman of the 2023 Nigeria Cup Organising Committee, Akoni Yinka Olafimihan.
Speaking at the pre-tournament briefing on Thursday, Olafimihan stated that all necessary arrangements to ensure that this year’s edition of the annual competition proceeds as planned have been put in place. He noted that from Saturday, September 23, when the weeklong competition kicks off with the Children’s tournament, it’s going to be a fun-filled event.
“We are set to go. All necessary arrangements have been made, so come this weekend, this year’s Nigeria Cup will officially commence,” Olafimihan said.
While children will take their turn on the course on Saturday, it will be the turn of the Caddies on Monday. Ladies will have their day on Tuesday, while a special Nigeria Cup kitty is scheduled for Wednesday.
On Thursday, invited professional golfers will compete on the golf course for a share of the N2.5 million stake in their category. Friday has been dedicated to Guests, Veterans, and Nigeria Cup sponsors.
The 2023 Nigeria Cup will be concluded on Saturday after the men’s game with a gala night at the Clubhouse. While thanking members of the Organizing Committee for their dedication, Olafimihan said that even though the country is facing challenges, there is always a need to celebrate.
Also speaking, Golf Captain, Wahab Aminu-Sarumi, promised to ensure the good working relationship between the parent body of the Nigeria Cup, the Ikoyi Golf Community Nigeria Association (IGCNA), and the golf section is maintained.
Also present at the briefing were Segun Adamolekun; Acting Chairman, IGCNA, Meckson Innocent Okoro; board member of IGCNA, Abiola Johnson; Organising committee member, Joseph Kadiri, member of the organizing committee, Edward Odejobi member of the Organising Committee, Kelvin Anyaegbunam of NOVA Bank, and Alex Lawal, representatives of Nigeria Breweries.
