Says ‘trip to World Relays still on course’
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), yesterday, released its guidelines for zonal elections ahead of the 2025 elective congress. The Secretary General of the AFN, Israel Inwang, told The Guardian, yesterday, that the zonal elections will be held between May 14 and 16 in each of the six zonal headquarters of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
According to him, forms for the zonal elections are available online and can also be picked up at the AFN Secretariat in Abuja. The AFN had earlier sent a letter to directors of sports across the federation, states’ chairmen/secretaries, and all athletics stakeholders regarding the zonal election.
Inwang said yesterday that the federation had fixed between May 5 and 12 as the deadline for the submission of forms.
The AFN scribe was, however, silent on the date and venue for the elective congress, saying: “Let us finish with the business of the zonal election first.”
On Team Nigeria’s trip to the 2025 World Relays in China, Inwang said: “We are working hard to ensure that our athletes make the trip. Maybe, by tomorrow, we will be able to tell Nigerians the position of things. But I can tell you that everything is on course.”
The Guardian, however, learnt, yesterday that the ongoing trade war between the United States and China is slowing down many things, including the issuance of travel documents to athletes and officials that are going into China.
The 2025 World Relays will hold between May 10 and 11 in China. The Nigerian team to the World Relays is made up of 17 athletes, who will compete in four events in Guangzhou. They will represent the country in the Men’s 4x100m relay, Women’s 4x100m relay, Mixed 4x100m relay, and Mixed 4x400m relay.
