Ajayi wins Philip Shaibu birthday invitational tourney

Dr. Charles Ajayi at the weekend scored 71 nets to win the Philip Shaibu Birthday Invitational Golf Tournament held at the Golf Section of the Benin Club (BCGS).

The two-term captain of the club, aged over 60, proved bookmakers wrong as he beat many young golfers, including the winner of the recent Governor’s Cup golf tourney, Victor Oriasotie, who played 72 net to settle for the second position.

Over 100 golfers featured in the two-day tournament organised by Committee of Friends of Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, in collaboration with the BCGS.

The closing ceremony was witnessed by members of the state’s cabinet, guest golfers, friends of the deputy governor, among other dignitaries.
Speaking on his victory, Dr. Ajayi tasked young golfers to buckle up, saying he was ready to win more laurels next year despite his age.
Earlier, the deputy governor thanked the organisers, and guest players from Ikoyi Club and other clubs, who came to honour him.

He pledged to uphold the tenets of golf and development of other sports in the state and Nigeria as well.
In the ladies’ category, it was the battle of former captains as Nkiru Awosika (hcp.20) beat Suwadetu Mahmud by a net, having played 71 net to win the event.

Incumbent captain, Juliet Ugiagbe played a distant 85 net to place third, while another ex-captain, Debby Otabor won the best gross award with 92 gross.
Similarly, Prof. Josephine Mokwunyei won the veteran’s cadre with 76 nett, Wilco Otabor lifted the men’s veteran trophy with 74 net, while John Ogbeide won the super veteran cadre with 72 net. Oscar Iyare won the best gross award with 80 gross.
