Ali hits Morocco as Edo Queens eye N1 billion jackpot
As Nigeria’s flagbearer in this year’s CAF Women Champions league, Edo Queens FC, prepare for their semifinal cracker on Tuesday, Chairman of Edo Sports Commission, Yusuf Ali is expected to hit Morocco today to ginger the players to victory.
Edo Queens, who came from behind to eliminate the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundown Ladies of South Africa to top their group, will play against TP Mazembe of Congo in the first Semifinal today.
If Edo Queens win today’s tie and go on to lift the trophy, they will bring over N1 billion to Nigeria. The team is already guaranteed N500 million by making the semifinal of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Speaking with The Guardian, Alli, an Olympian, said he is confident Edo Queens will live up to the expectations of Nigerians.
“The plan is to win the cup,” Ali said. “I will be flying to Morocco tomorrow (Monday) for total support for the team. We took a lot of good players and camped them for over two months for the CAF Champions League. I am not surprised they are in this stage of the championship. I pray they lift the title to boost women footfall in Nigeria,” Yusuf Ali stated.
The Guardian recalls that when Edo Queens qualified for the CAF Champions league, they were rewarded with N100,000,000. Edo Queens won the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) for the first time this year. If they win the continental Champions League title, they will be the first Nigerian team ever to do so.
